April 2017 Pharmacological Research published my article on the guidelines for making figures and slides for the colorblind. I first became aware that colorblind people had difficulties with color figures form the late Professor Roland Coulson and have been working on formulating figures that are understandable by the colorblind for more that a decade. Steiner M.D. died on 11 November 2014. As noted in the previous item he received the University of Chicago Alumni Medal in June. Click here to see his obituary from the New York Times. June 2014 Robert Roskoski Jr. attended the 50th reunion of the University of Chicago School of Medicine. During reunion weekend his Ph.D. advisor, Donald F. Steiner M.D. received the Alumni Medal bestowed by the University of Chicago, the highest award that the University grants. To see reunion and award photos, click here. January 2014 Robert Roskoski Jr. joined the Editorial Board of Pharmacological Research. October 2013 The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research was featured in an article by Douglas Hanks of the Miami Herald on the effect of the US Government shutdown on NIH funding. Although it is not included in the article, I pointed out the the NIH budget suffered a 5% cut as the result of the sequester, and this so far has had a much more adverse effect on the flow of research dollars than the shutdown. The article also points out the importance of NIH PubMed web site that posts the titles and content of biomedical research papers; PubMed is relied upon by investigators, both basic and clinical, as well as clinicians involved in patient care. September 2013 I attended a comprehensive board review in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Center in Houston, Texas from 23-28 September 2013. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research continues to study and evaluate targeted protein kinase inhibitors used in cancer therapy. August 2013 I attended the 4th Annual Retreat and the 65th Anniversary of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa. Click here to see photos of the participants. May 2013 The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research is a supporter of the Brevard Music Center, which is located in Brevard, NC. April 2013 The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research is a backer of the Flat Rock Playhouse, which is located in Flat Rock, NC. March 2013 WCQS and WYQS, Western North Carolina Public Radio Stations that make up the Mountain Air Network, featured the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research on 24 March 2012, our seventh anniversary. December 2012 Josh Barbanel of the Wall Street Journal used the November 2012 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research data in his article "Medical Schools Jockey for Research Space." December 2012 As noted by the Chronicle of Higher Education in the March 2012 news, some institutions use the Blue Ridge Rankings to tout the achievements of their medical school. These include the University of Miami and the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. August 2012 I was asked to tour the University of North Carolina at Ashville on 23 August as the guest of Dean Keith E. Krumpe and Sophia Ungert. I was amazed on nature of the class Biology Laboratories taken by freshman and sophomore undergraduate students. Among other things, they prepared mutant G-proteins using the most modern techniques. This reminded my of one of Francis Crick's aphorisms: it takes only 10 years to go from the work of a Nobel Prize to a Master's Thesis project. I extend this somewhat by stating that it takes only 15 years to go from the work of a Nobel Prize to an undergraduate class laboratory exercise. July 2012 The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research was closed for summer travels. These travels included a visit to the Bangkok (Thailand) School of Nursing, the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Bejing, China), and the Organization of Spanish Medical Colleges (Madrid, Spain). Visiting the Pantheon in Paris, where Pierre and Marie Curie and Pierre Eugne Marcelin Berthalot are interred, was one of the highpoints of these summer travels. The Curies are known for their pioneering work on radioactivity (a term they coined) and Berthalot is considered to be the father of chemistry. October 2011 ASBMB Today, the monthly news magazine of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, published an obituary of Dr. Jack D. Herbert in their September 2011 issue. September 2011 Robert Roskoski Jr. attended the second Frontiers in Basic Cancer Research in San Francisco, CA. The meeting, which was held on 14-18 September, was sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). June 2011 Dr. Jack D. Herbert, a founding director of the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, passed away quietly on 21 June 2011 after a long illness. May 2011 Robert Roskoski Jr. attended the 6th Protein Kinases in Drug Discovery conference in Boston, MA. The meeting, which was held on 26-27 May, was sponsored by GTCbio. April 2011 Robert Roskoski Jr. attended the meeting "Science in the Mountains 2011" near Asheville, NC on April 18-19. This meeting was sponsored by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. March 2011 WCQS and WYQS, Western North Carolina Public Radio Stations that make up the Mountain Air Network, featured the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research on 24 March 2011, our fifth anniversary. December 2010 The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research is an affiliate of Research!America and was featured in their "Members Take Action" section in the December 2010 newsletter. The paper entitled "The biosynthesis of N-arachidonoyl dopamine (NADA), a putative endocannabinoid and endovanilloid, via conjugation of arachidonic acid with dopamine" was published in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids. This research represents an international collaboration involving five institutions. We note with regret that one of the senior investigators in this study, Dr. J. Michael Walker, died as a result of congestive heart failure on 5 January 2008. He was only 57 years of age. You can access this paper by clicking here. Robert Roskoski Jr. attended a meeting of the University of Chicago School of Medicine Class of 1964 on 5 June 2009. For a look at some of the photos, click here. Robert Roskoski Jr. attended a symposium near the NIH in Bethesda in honor of Earl R. Stadtman on 29 April 2009. Dr. Stadtman received his PhD under the tutelage of HA Barker at the University of California at Berkeley and was a postdoctoral associate of Dr. Fritz Lipmann at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
