| Description |
Citizens Board dinner held in honor of University
of Chicago Professors Charles B. Huggins and Robert S. Mulliken,
recipients respectively of the 1966 Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine, and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. They are pictured
with other Nobel Laureates and their wives: Sir John Eccles;
Margaret Wellman Huggins and Dr. Huggins; Muriel McClure Beadle
and University President George W. Beadle; Mary Helen von No
Mulliken and Dr. Mulliken; Alice Ackert Doisy, and Robert E.
Brooker, University Trustee and President of Montgomery Ward
& Company. |
| Subject Terms |
Huggins, Charles Brenton, 1901-1997 | Huggins,
Margaret Wellman, 1904-1983 | Mulliken, Mary Helen von No,
died 1975 | Mulliken, Robert Sanderson, 1896-1986 | Beadle,
Muriel McClure, 1915-1994 | Doisy, Alice Ackert, 1894-1964 |
| For commentary on Dr.
Huggins, see http://www.brimr1.org/Reprints/HistoricalSketches.htm
and http://www.brimr1.org/Reprints/HugginsQuotes.htm.
Bernard J. Ransil edited the autobiography of Mulliken
entitled" Life of a Scientist: An autobiographical account
of the development of molecular orbital theory." Ransil
worked with Mulliken a few years before medical school and spent
every other weekend at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near
Dayton, OH using their "super computer" to crunch
numbers. Perhaps Mulliken was closer to us than you might think
because he considered such calculations in the realm of
"bastard" mathematics.
Both Carrie Krewson Schopf and Mary Ann Csontos Roloff
appreciated Dr. Huggins humanitarian approach to medical
education in the Urology Clinic. |

Dwight J. Ingle, Professor of Physiology in the
University of Chicago's Ben May Institute, and Chairman of the
Department of Physiology. |
| Dr. Ingle prepared animals
for Dr. Wool's physiology laboratory owing to his (Ingle's)
superb small animal operating skills. On more than one occasion
I walked by Stagg field in the afternoon and saw Ingle running
around the track and I thought that he must be crazy. He was
ahead of his time prior to the national advent of aerobics when
30 years later even President Clinton could be seen running in
the Washington Mall with his Secret Service Agents. |
