Dr. Jack Durnin Herbert passed away peacefully
in River Ridge LA on June 21, 2011 at the age of 70. He is survived by
his wife Sue Herbert, two sons: Alan (Becky) and Jonathan, two
granddaughters: Sadie and Sophie, and 2 sisters, Joan Herbert Murchison
(Cam) of
Black Mountain
,
NC
and Anna Herbert Farrell (Ed) of
Springfield
,
VA.
Dr. Herbert was born in
Hammond
,
LA
to the parents of Jack Farley Herbert and Ruth Durnin Herbert. Dr.
Herbert was a resident of the
New Orleans
area for the past 48 years. He was a graduate of
Rhodes
College
(
Memphis
,
TN
) and received his PhD in biochemistry from
Louisiana
State
University
Health
Sciences
Center
(
New Orleans
). As Course Director of Dental Biochemistry, he mentored numerous
medical, dental, graduate students and junior faculty. He had a unique
lecturing style and used his deep resonant voice to emphasize important
points. In addition to his lifelong dedication to science, he had a
passion for the culture and camaraderie of the New Orleans Jazz and
Heritage Festival. Since its inception, it was rare to find a day that
he was not in attendance. A Memorial gathering will begin at 10:00 A.M.
with service at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the home of his
